A good public square has to work on an ordinary afternoon as well as on a crowded event night. That question sits behind Melbourne’s proposed Holmes Park Plaza, which would expand the existing park into a more flexible gathering place.
In a September 28 update, the city reported that about 40 people attended a September 15 design workshop. The concept includes an amphitheater, children’s play space and event areas, while incorporating the existing tree canopy and natural features.

Consultant Kimley-Horn will review the feedback and refine the concept before a future presentation to city leadership. The city’s stated target is design completion in early to mid-2027. That is a design timetable, not an announced opening date.
Residents following the proposal can make their own practical checklist: where would someone sit in the shade, how would a parent supervise play, and what would the space offer when no event is scheduled? Those everyday questions help turn a drawing into a useful neighborhood conversation. Watch the city’s project updates for the next opportunity to see how the concept develops.
